Tough Questions at 9 a.m.
Him: "Are my mom and dad always going to be my mom and dad?"
Me: "Of course."
Him: "And I'll always be their son?"
Me: "Yes."
Him: "And they are never going to die?"
Me: "Well...everybody dies."
(He makes cat sounds for a while. The sounds are seemingly unrelated to our conversation.)
Him: "But they won't die for a long, long time, right?"
Me: "Right, and you don't have to worry about that now."
Him: "Okay."
(We talk about jet airplanes and his missed homework assignments for a little while.)
Him: "But you and I aren't ever going to die, right?"
Me: "Ummm, like I said..."
Him: "But not for a long, long time?"
Me: "Right."
Him: "We won't ever die right now?"
Me: "No. We won't ever die right now."
Me: "Of course."

I think I had this same conversation with my oldest daughter when she was younger and she had just found out that my mom died when I was 10.
so i guess you didn't point out that when we die it will happen right now, just not right now right now. (unless right now is the time when we die.)

Churlita-I think this conversation would have been cuter had this been my own kid.
Mochila- I was going the Epicurus route: “Death, the most frightening of bad things, is nothing to us; since when we exist death is not yet present, and when death is present, then we do not exist." Per Epi, time is only experienced by those in existence, so there can never be a dead right now. Also, I just wanted him to shut up. P.S., this is the famous person's kid I mentioned...
*Sigh* ... I sure wish I had grandchildren.
Love,
Mom
PS- Penny, I've hidden your birth control pills.
